What is Explore MPA?
Our guided trails slow you down and immerse you in the coastline, revealing the wonder and fragility of the Aliwal Shoal Hope Spot one step at a time. From shoreline walking to tidal pool snorkelling, river kayaking, citizen science and cultural storytelling, our trips offer a deeper way to travel.
You don't need to be a scientist, diver or seasoned hiker. Bring curiosity, comfortable walking shoes and a willingness to experience the coast differently. We'll take care of the rest.

Discover Aliwal Camino →Why walking matters
It slows us down, opens our senses, and deepens our relationship with the ocean and coastline. Through movement, conversation, and immersion, walking becomes a form of connection to nature, to community, and to self.
"This coastline raised us. Every tide teaches something new. When people walk with us, they start to understand why we must protect it."
Why conservation matters
A Mission Blue Hope Spot and protected marine sanctuary, home to coral reefs, sharks, rays, fish migrations, birds, dunes, and timeless geological formations. But it is also vulnerable.
Every trail integrates citizen science: water sampling, microplastics surveys, dune health observations, and species monitoring in partnership with ORI, SAAMBR, and the MPA Day Alliance.

Meet the Blue Guardians
Blue Guardians are trained local guides and conservation storytellers who lead every trail with care, safety and deep local knowledge. They are the stewards of the Hope Spot, and walking with them means learning from people who carry this coastline in their hearts.
