Do I need to be very fit to join an Explore MPA trail?

No extreme fitness is required. Our trails are designed to be accessible, achievable, and supported. Daily distances vary by trail, we walk at a steady pace, and most trails are slack-packed. If you can comfortably walk for a few hours a day, you'll be just fine.

Do I need hiking or outdoor experience?

No prior hiking experience is necessary. Our Blue Guardians guide every step, manage pacing, and support the group throughout. What matters most is curiosity, openness, and a willingness to engage with the experience.

What is slack packing?

Slack packing means you walk with only a light daypack while your main luggage is transported between accommodation stops. You carry water, snacks, sun protection and personal essentials. We handle the logistics.

Are the walks safe?

Yes. All trails are guided. Routes are planned around tides, weather, and conditions. Guides are trained in first aid and coastal safety, and routes may be adjusted when needed. We always err on the side of caution — for people and for the coastline.

The coast is dynamic — and that's part of its beauty. We plan each trail carefully around tides, weather forecasts, and sea conditions. If conditions require changes, your guides will adapt the route or activities to keep the experience safe and enjoyable.

Do I need to swim or snorkel?

Swimming and snorkelling are optional. Many experiences involve walking, observing, and learning from land. Snorkelling and kayaking are always guided and optional — there's no pressure to join any activity you're not comfortable with.

What kind of accommodation do we use?

We partner with trusted local guesthouses, lodges, and eco-stays. Accommodation varies by trail and location, but always prioritises comfort, cleanliness, safety, and local support. Private room options are often available — just ask.

What about food and dietary requirements?

Meals are arranged through local providers where possible. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other dietary requirements — please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

It depends on the trail. Hope Spot Trails suit families with active teens. EcoCamino is flexible and family-friendly. The Aliwal Camino is best suited to adults and experienced walkers. If you're unsure, we're happy to advise.

Can we book a private group or custom experience?

Absolutely. We offer private group departures, family groups, corporate teams, schools and youth groups, and conservation-focused custom itineraries. Just get in touch and we'll co-create something meaningful.

What is the citizen science component — do I need experience?

No experience is required. Citizen science activities are simple, guided, and clearly explained. They're inclusive, meaningful, and help you understand the coastline while contributing to real conservation efforts.
